Conjunctions: Teaching Implications
Pupils' use of conjunctions
- Analysis of pupils' writing in GCSE English examinations shows that pupils tend to restrict themselves to using the most common conjunctions. Only at grade A were more unusual or complex conjunctions used, including the co-ordinators neither... nor, and not only ...but also, and the subordinators, since and whilst.
- The principal teaching implications of conjunctions, however, relate to the management of clauses and handling subordination and co-ordination effectively.
