Determiners

Definition:

This is a relatively recent introduction to the world of grammar terminology and many older teachers/linguists may be unfamiliar with it.

  • Determiners are a cluster of words which precede the noun (phrase) and determine definiteness, quantity, number or possession. Many very familiar words are determiners: each; every; no; some; most; all; both; many; few; several...

  • The definite (the) and indefinite (a) articles are both determiners which define definiteness. Other determiners include:

    Definiteness Quantity Possession Number Demonstrative
